WelcomeHome Prefab Kit

WelcomeHome Prefab Container Home Kit

Another Shipping Container Concept Home. This one is by Zigloo a firm out of Canada. We have covered some of their designs in the past, including a really cool Floating Ocean City. This concept design is made from three shipping containers, to create a 800 sq. ft. home in the country side or an urban infill. The architect says he would like to deliver these home at around $150 per sq ft. (via zigloo.ca)

The WelcomeHome totals 800 square feet on a small footprint. Perfect for a get-away cottage, a quick guest home, an environmental infill solution. The design lends itself perfectly to an off-the-grid solution utilizing wind power, solar power, solar hot water, passive air circulation organic spray-foam insulation and a green roof.

WelcomeHome kit will cost USD $12,000 plus shipping to the destination to your choice. With the foundations, standard services, and interior finishes, my aim is to make this kit a $120,000 quick build solution ($150/sqft).

The upper floor plan has 2 bedrooms (one overlooking the entry, and one with a private balcony) and 3 piece bathroom (shower).

The main floor plan is an open concept with the living, dining and kitchen areas all open to each other. The laundry easily accommodates a stacking washer/dryer and mechanical systems necessary for the comfort of the WelcomeHome.

Adam Kalkin's Cottage

This 2,000 square foot home, built in 2001, is actually built around a smaller cottage-style house that has stood in that location for decades. The cottage house almost looks like a gigantic version of a dollhouse inside of the huge storage shed that forms the exterior of this innovative house. The 3 bedroom 2.5 bath home is also made from 5 large shipping containers and 3 on the bottom, and 2 stacked on top of those.

This place also contains all of the modern features of a ‘normal’ home, but it’s supposedly built to last much longer. The creator of this innovative home is Adam Kalkin, and he’s actually selling these homes for as little as $76,000, or less than $100 per square foot and not a bad deal considering traditional construction of a new home averages about double that amount.

Adam Kalkin is most recognizable for the shipping container coffee shop he designed last year for Illy. Now, Fast Company has a profile on Kalkin with a bunch of pics of his other structures.
Kalkin's prefab homes use anywhere from one to six, or sometimes even 12 shipping containers as the frame for the home. Kalkin's homes tend to range in price from $150-$400 per square foot, with the cheapest container house costing $50,000. Some are very simple, merely containing a room in in a single container, where as others have whole other structures built inside them.
