Business In A Box - Shipping Container Restaurant
The thought of a shipping container restaurant was quite negative to almost everyone until they actually opened their doors. Now it’s packed every night by reservation only, and even the economic recession has not slowed it’s success.
This very unique restaurant is in Rotterdam, Netherlands and was brought to our attention by one of our good ISBU Association Members in the Netherlands, … we now have many.
The restaurant concept should be no surprise since the TempoHousing shipping container construction in near by Amsterdam has inspired everyone globally, especially business entrepreneurs in the Netherlands.
The name of this luxury “shipping container” restaurant is named Wijn of Water (meaning wine or water). Even though it has been in business a few years now, the Wijn of Water in Rotterdam is still a popular and cozy restaurant. Both tourists and the regular locals who travel many kilometers to this fine lunch and night spot report that it’s fine cuisine and unique atmosphere is very addictive.
We believe it’s not simply the rustic shipping container concept that draws people but the fact the owners have been creative in using a horizontal ISBU (shipping container) as well as the common vertical architecture. The horizontal ISBU is place so the patrons can view the actual bottom of the 40′ container. This design on the bottom of 40′ containers is very different than most expect.
The top portion of the bottom is quite common now on most 40′ containers and is simply reinforcement to accommodate a “goosneck” trailer chassis for safer transport. The bottom view of the container is original except for and access door added on the lower half of the container.
As you can see, a horizontal container and container bottoms can also be used to create unique architectural designs.
The restaurant provides lunch, dinner, catering, meetings and weddings. We expect to see more of this type ISBU creativity in the U.S. and other parts of the world soon.
